Rhythms of the South Marketplace
New Orleans

  • New Orleans is a 24-hour city, the only one in the US apart from Las Vegas. Make the most of it!

  • Look out for fab acts such as the Subdudes, Alex Chilton, Dash Rip Rock and Sonny Landreth for the New Orleans crossover sound, Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys for modern Cajun/zydeco and Geno Delafose and Joe Walker for zydeco.

  • Go shopping...Louisiana is tax free for international visitors.

  • Swamp tours are best in the morning when alligators are friskiest. No paddling!

  • Try flamboyant local beers such as Dixie's Blackened Voodoo Lager or microbrewery Abita Springs' Purple Haze.

  • Don't miss local delicacies such as boudin (rich, spicy sausage) and tasso (hard cured ham). Alligator, frogs legs (a bit like chicken, really) and even turtle soup are also 'must-trys'.

  • The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival spans eight days in late April-early May features all manner of local music, and big international names too.

  • For real New Orleans jazz, head for Preservation Hall in the French Quarter.

  • Remember - Creoles are not Cajuns. the former are traditionally city dwellers, descendants of French or Spanish settlers; the latter country folk, descendants of French sent packing by the British from New Acadia (Nova Scotia).

  • Alone in America you can stroll the streets clutching an alcoholic drink...just get a plastic 'go cup'.

  • Atlanta
Pick up a copy of the free weekly Creative Loafing for music listings. Friday's Atlanta Journal-Constitution is useful too.
